Winter is a season of cold, dryness, and stillness. In Ayurveda, these qualities are linked to Vata dosha, which can become aggravated during the colder months. When Vata is out of balance, it may show up as dry skin, low energy, poor sleep, anxiety, or a sense of feeling ungrounded.

Ayurvedic winter self-care focuses on warmth, routine, rest, and gentle practices that support the nervous system and overall well-being.


Establish a Consistent Daily Routine


Ayurveda places great importance on daily rhythm, especially in winter. A steady routine helps calm the mind and stabilise Vata energy.

  • Wake up and go to bed at regular times. Consider going to bed earlier to make the most of resting during the winter months.

  • Create simple morning and evening rituals, such as 15 minutes of yoga, meditation, relaxing baths, and abhyanga.

  • Move through your day at a slower, more intentional pace and bring mindfulness into all that you do.


Consistency is one of the most powerful forms of winter self-care.


Abhyanga: Ayurvedic Self-Massage


Abhyanga, or self-oil massage, is a deeply nourishing Ayurvedic practice ideal for winter. It helps counter dryness, supports circulation, and promotes relaxation.

  • Use warm sesame oil or almond oil to massage the body with slow, grounding strokes

  • Practise daily or several times per week and follow with a warm shower or bath straight afterwards


This ritual supports both physical comfort and emotional balance.


Prioritise Rest and Deep Sleep


Winter is a natural time for rest and restoration. Ayurvedic self-care encourages honouring the body’s need for extra sleep and downtime.

  • Reduce screen time before sleep, and ideally, no screen for at least an hour before settling down for the night. Read a book or allow space for stillness and reflection.

  • Create a calming evening routine and go to bed earlier when possible.


Rest is essential for resilience and long-term wellbeing.


Gentle Movement and Breathwork


Rather than intense exercise, Ayurveda recommends gentle, grounding movement during winter.

  • Slow yoga or stretching, wearing comfortable joggers or your pyjamas

  • Wrap up warm and take time out to enjoy walking in nature

  • Calming breath practices, such as slow nasal breathing or alternate nostril breathing


These practices help maintain circulation while soothing the nervous system.
